Vermont 3: Husband (33), Boy (4yrs) and Girl (1yr) |
Is anyone interested a veggie garden? Ever since we got our house, I have been trying and trying to build a huge green house of common veggies and herbs that we use. I love the farmers market but I find myself wanting to go back to my old ways of growing up in Vermont... Farming. My only two issues are cost of start up (building/planting)and having more than we would eat! Of course I could manage some time here and there to build and plant, hey, this could even become an event for the kids to get their hands in some soil! If they want of course. We should have our new playground up in the back yard in the next week or so.
So what do you all think? |

I've been wanting to do one, too. Have you heard of square foot gardens? A friend of mine is doing one and it's been successful so far.

I am definitely interested in one! What a great idea! So, what were you thinking of doing and how could we all be a part of it?

I don't know very much about them, other than say you have a 5' x 5' garden box. You then divide it into 1x1 square feet and plant different things in each square foot (that would, of course, give you 25 squares); that way you grow just enough and aren't stuck with a ton of, say, zucchini that you won't be able to eat or even give away. My friend has one with tomatoes, squash, beans, and I can't remember what else. Here's a link:

Well, I am definatly up to starting it in the backyard and tending to it.
I wanted to build a green house to attempt controlling some of the elements such as all the critters that we see trotting through (even though our yard is fenced). I would of course prefer to keep it all organic, which shouldn't be hard. If others wanted to get involved they are of course welcome to come over for the planting process or even just day to day tending if some of the kids were interested. Like I said their should be a playground up soon so it wouldn't be a one-event trip. Again my only issues currently are the costs of materials (building, seeds, soil) and making sure people want some of the produce |

Do you have an estimate of the cost to start?

I haven't gotten that far, but something I can come up with.
