Today is my hubby's birthday and we had decided to name the baby after our fathers (he is very close to his and I was to mine before he passed away) UNLESS the baby was born today in which case he will be named after my hubby! It's a really cute idea but we never thought I would still be prego by now and we are having second thoughts because we've been bonding with the baby as 'Jack' after his dad. I didn't realize how much was in a name before now but it's really important to me. Where did you get your baby names from?

Well, For my daughter we named her Kaylee and that is not really from anywhere I just like it. But we spelled her name the way we did after my dad. His middle name is Lee, so that is why I spelled her name this way. With her middle name we wanted to kinda have all three cultures in her name. My husband is half Chinese and Japanese. So her middle name is Siu Leung which is Chinese and means little dragon. Our last name is Japanese. We wanted our daughter to be proud of where she came from and to know her background.

I pondered this for such a long time! I always knew I would name my daughter either Violet or Lily Bloom (from the time I was a kid). I have a great Grandmother whose name was Rose Violet Bloom (Bloom was her maiden name). I always LOVED it! I also LOVED the name Violet and was so torn over Lily Bloom, or Violet Bloom. Well, when I discovered I was having a boy, I was at a loss as I was always so sure, I would have a girl! We read baby name books and read the SS# top names stuff. I wanted something that had family meaning. My husband and wanted someting not too common (his name is Chris). I wanted something a little more common. My parents are hippies and named my 3 siblings (and me) some very “far out” names. Also, it seemed all the “good names” were being scooped by people having kids before us (we had our first at 33). I love writing and poetry, so does my mother who passed this passion on to me at a young age. My mother's name is Eileen...so, we settled on Emerson John (as in Ralph Waldo Emerson). John is my husband’s middle name and my brother’s first name (well the one he changed his “far out” hippy name to-does that count)? We also got to keep the “E” for my Mom! He is such an Emerson too Smiler.

Lily Bloom was born 2.5 years later Smiler. We chose Lily over Violet as my Mother-in-law's name is Linda...so we kept the “L” for her Smiler.

Anyway, sure I did not help you much. However, it is a big decision and you have to also consider all of the nicknames he may have to live w/ forever! What he will feel about his name when he introduces himself, as a man, as the CEO of a major company, or is running for president…yes, you have a lot of considering to do .

My son's name is timothy michael. I chose the names because both are biblical. and one of the names runs in every generation of our family as well. (plus my ex-boyfriend).

if he was born a week earlier (easter) his name would had been Joshua Emmanual. Joshua because it means "God of Salvation". Emmanual due to his dad's midddle name. I've always wanted to name my first born Timothy. I can't really remember why other than its biblical. The other names I like are David, Paul and Joshua.

I think it is cool you want to name your son after his grandpas. I think that is very unique. It should be honor to be name after gpa! Big Grin

LW, how cool! My baby is named Violet. I wanted Lily but I named my dog Lily years ago so that was a no can do. Our first choice was Rose and we were thinking about Rose Violet but said two flower names might not work but we're glad we named her Violet cause she is a shy little violet for sure.

Since my step-son was born a long time before I met my husband, I can only say that he was named after my husband's best friend. My husband's best friend was Byron, but he wanted a variation of it, so he liked and choose Myron for him. I like it, it's a cool name.

For my son, he was given a family member's name. And we changed his middle from who he was named after. So his name ended up being Carl Riley. I like it, it's a strong good name that he can use as an adult, no matter what field he goes into.
Carl also likes that his name has a spanish translation.

With Mikayla, her dad insisted that she be named that because he liked it so well. I choose the spelling. And we argued back and forth on the middle name. After some deliberation, she was named Mikayla Grace. No other reason than we liked it.

My son is William Ryan...William is after my husband, my stepdad, and my step brother. Ryan just because we liked it. we call him Ryan

my daughters first name had been planned from the time i was about 4 years old. Her name is Lillian Kate. Lillian is after my grandmother (who was my best friend until she died) and my husbands grandmother and Kate, just because we liked it. we call her Lilly

we're pretty stuck now. if we had another one, we have to come up with a name that meets all the criteria. the first name has to be a family name and have 7 letters. the middle name has to have 4 letters and be a name we really love.

I think if it feels and sounds right to you, Mary, you should stick with Jack.

It's a timeless, friendly name. And all the Jacks I've met are smart people who are comfortable in their own skin.

How did you come up with the choice of name?

I agree, Jack is a great, classic name. And if you've bonded with it, I'd stick.

We picked both our names pretty easily. Neither of them have any significance -- they were just the only names we liked both times around. Their middle names (or first name with my first, he goes by his middle name) are family names -- after my husband and his father. Next time around we'll name him -- or her -- after someone on my side.

Oh boy...

When I was little I always wanted an Alexander or Alexandria. When I had my first I was 16 and luckily had a fantastic couple who wanted to adopt and keep whatever name I chose. So I chose Alexander Thor. It was just a strong name and each appeared in our family here and there (Christian was a huge family name and I wanted to avoid it!)My three brothers all had Norwegian first or middle names.

Well once married, with his Indian traditions, I saw it a great opportunity to find nice sounding 'odd ball' names (somewhat like my own) that I always wanted to name my children.

I looked at thousands, possibly millions of names and had a fantastic list to go from. My hubby and I narrowed it down...taking out ones he knew and were popular in India, or people he knew and didn't care for. Weeks before our first arrived we finally decided on an S name (to follow suit of my hubby's brothers kids-him and his bro were both N) .... Siraj (sir-aj)-Crown of the King.
I knew I wanted a girl, or just one more child so in my mind I wanted to name the girl Freyja which had Norwegian origins. He didn't like it. So we settled on Savita (savi-tha)-The sun. Which is actually an 'old name' in India, like Hyacinth or virgil here.

We wanted strong, solid meaning, easy pronouncing, different names...all starting with S.

So we had our work cut out for us... she was also named just a couple weeks before delivery.

Yes, it really took us that long.

Good luck Mary!

Oh, and yes, from all the Jacks I know are very intelligent (all of them), strong, confident people. Master-Jack-of-all-trades as my step dad likes to say.

check out some numerology for some added fun...I have several books and are always a good ready when picking apart my kids names Smiler

JACK IT IS!!! That is if he ever decides to join us in this world. No baby on hubby's Bday so he will not be named after him. I spent most of the night with contractions but not too severe and not regular but def painful enough to keep me up. I finally fell asleep and woke up to nothing. I thought for sure this was it!!! My hubby had a cold so I guess Jack's hiding out a little longer to stay germ-free! My belly is actually bruising and bursting blood vessels it's getting so big and tight!

AND FOR MY DAUGHTER WELL, I WENT TO PUERTO RICO FOR MY GRANDMOTHER'S FUNERAL ANDA MONTH LATE COME TO FIND OUT I WAS PREGGO. SO I CALLED MY DAUGHTER AFTER MY GRANDMOTHER AND MODERNIZED IT. GRANDMA'S NAME WAS VALERIA(VALERIE) AMILIA, SO I CALLED HE AMILIYAH VALERIA; AMY FOR SHORT.

I love the name Jack! That's one of my nephew's names. Great name Smiler

Oooh and I love flower names for girls! I loooove the name Violet and we considered that if we had a girl.

My husband and I came up with girl names pretty easily, but boy names were hard so wouldn't you know it that we had 3 boys Smiler. We already had several nephews so some of the names we liked were already taken. We both liked classic Biblical names, nothing too unusual. I also really like "old man" names, but some of my suggestions didn't fly with my husband lol! Well, we agreed on first names (although our 3rd wasn't officially named until after he was born), and we did family names for the middle.

Samuel Joel (dh's first name)
Benjamin Daniel (my FIL's first name)
Nathanael Joseph (after my grandpa)
