My sister recently told me that her hair stylist (in L.A.) told her to stop using shampoo that contains sodium lauryl sulfate (I think that's what it's called). It's a harsh chemical found in almost all shampoos that causes the sudsing. She switched and has had major improvement in her hair quality (so she says - I haven't yet seen her). But anyway, I did a bit of reading online and found this article. Well, since I don't like to spend a lot of money on hair products (I usually use Suave shampoo and Garnier Fructis conditioner) I found a line called Organix at Walmart for around $6 that is sulfate-free. There was even a mail-in rebate on it to reimburse the cost up to $6.99. I've only used it once, but really like the way my hair feels. I don't wash my hair every day because I don't want to kill it, but usually after 2 days it needs to be washed. But it's been 2 days and my hair still feels clean. I liken it to harsh facial cleansers that actually strip your skin of its natural oils only to then have your skin over-produce oils. Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there. Anyone else heard of this someone new trend on sulfate-free shampoos?

I was actually just looking for a new shampoo. I heard that you should change your shampoo once in a while. (I'm not sure why...) So I will definitely have to try this out! Thanks for the info, Marianne.

Did the stylist say why she should switch? Was it just for a change in the way her hair responds to the shampoo and feels better or does the chemical do some kind of damage? We are on a well and a salt treatment/softener and aerator system since we don't have county water lines and if you've ever used softened water, you know to cut well back on the amount of soaps and shampoos or you will be rinsing suds forever! If the chemical is just a sudsing agent then maybe not having it would be about normal for us.

She colors her hair and it is prone to damage. Her stylist suggested it because I believe using sulfate-free shampoo isn't as harsh. Also, I didn't give much thought about it, but I imagine L.A. water is a bit harder than your soft water, which could make a difference!

I suppose if your hair feels healthy and soft, then there's no reason to switch. I think sulfates just cause the bubbly lather and trap dirt/oils. But so far my hair feels better after switching. It just feels gentler. It could be too soon to really tell. It could just be, like Stacy said, just a matter of switching your products every once in a while. Marianne |
