Hi and welcome!

I'm not sure about free school supplies; there may be some local organizations that do that that others on this site might be able to refer you to. But I know that if you watch for back to school sales you can get some things for just pennies. Are there certain things in particular that you need? There may be some moms on here that can help.

I would check with the Salvation Army. I heard they might be giving some school supplies to children.

I can't believe we aren't even going to get a back-to-school tax break this year!

Call St. Augustine's Catholic Student Center, 352-372-3533. They're having a school supply collection drive going on right now - I don't think they will be actually giving out the supplies to individual families, but will probably donate the supplies to an organization like Catholic Charities to distribute. Good luck!

I was at Wal-Mart yesterday and they have spiral notebooks with the tear out pages (the small ones - maybe 70 pages of paper) for 5 cents. Yes, a nickle. They also have packs of loose leaf notebook paper for 50 cents. Folders with brads and pockets for 15 cents. Hope this helps.

I went to Walgreen's yesterday, and (with coupons from their weekly ad), I got lots of pens, paper, pencils, glue, crayons, and other supplies for less than $15. Most items are under 20 cents each.

Call the Alachua County Schools and ask the whomever answers to connect you with someone who would be able to discuss school supplies with you.

I KNOW that NO child is turned away from school due to a lack of supplies. My child is in the gifted magnet progam at William's Elem (the poorest elem school in the district) and most of the kids there are from VERY poor families....yet all have school supplies the first day of school.

Make the call; the number is: 352-955-7253, ext. 228

If the school system itself is unable to assist you, the person you speak to SHOULD be able to refer you to the proper agencies w/ regard to this issue. Good luck.

Smiler Thanks all....We moved here because my oldest son was being beatten by my ex husband, just a month ago..we had to get away from jacksonville and make a new start, times are so hard right now and i'm freaking, i had to recertify for food stamps and its taking all month long for them to send me them, and no such luck as a job!...so anything cheap is good for me, the boys are in need of loose paper, pencils, backpacks, crayons etc..etc..

Hi Momoffour,

I have folders, at least one backpack (barely used), paper (at least for the first few weeks) and pencils. Can we meet somewhere in Gainesville where I can pass them on?

Also, every year there's an event called Stuff the Bus that a local radio station runs. They collect back to school stuff and then pass it out to kids and families in need.

The contact info is: Stuff the Bus Chairman Jim Chandler at 352.237.3139 or jimcha62463@embarqmail.com.

Good afternoon,
I just cleaned out my sons closet and have 3-4 backpacks that are in really good condition if you would like them. Let me know and we can arrange you getting them.
