Hiya' Mommies,
UncleSugar is a proud and loving Grandaddy of two baby boys - Ryan is going to be 10 months in several days and Daniel will be six months. I want to buy a toddler bed for baby Ryan that his mommy & daddy picked out (fire engine bed). But, am curious as to when Ryan can actually sleep in it? Ryan is crawling all over the place - and will be walking soon. Can you mommies give me some insight on how soon Ryan may be ready for a toddler bed? I don't want him to be "at-risk" for injury by using the toddler bed too soon. THANKS! |

I believe it is when the child can get in and out of the bed by themselves. Walking and really know how to get around. My daughter is 18 months and she is ready for her toddler bed we just got to set it up.

It all depends on the child. My older son moved to a toddler bed at 18 months, but my nephew was almost 3 before he moved into his.
They could go ahead and set it up, then try him out in it during naps to get a sense of if he's ready. |

We actually left our daughter using her crib until she was just over 2 but I think she would have been okay in one a bit sooner. Her little brother was on the way and we sort of had to make the transition! I would think once the child can get in and out of the bed sounded right too, but then I know our son can climb right into his big sister's toddler bed and he is just 13 months. I don't know that I would be comfortable letting him sleep in one just yet, but that is me. Check out the board under 'classifieds' and you can see one version of a toddler bed that might suit your grandson just fine as it is all rounded edges and looks like it would offer a fun place to sleep! She is wanting to sell that one so maybe it will work out for you both!!

Everyone here is right on track!! It does depend on the child. My daughter is three now and we set up her twin bed in her room when she was almost 2 but she didn't sleep in it at night until just after she was three. She liked her crib and the security she felt in it. As long as they aren't climbing out of the crib, or trying to, and posing a safty risk there is no hurry to make the transition. But a great fire engine bed in his room will certainly be fun to play in and nap in maybe!! Good luck!

I agree! It all depends on the child. We moved our daughter to a toddler bed at 21 months. She wasn't trying to get out of her crib or anything. We just thought she was ready for a change, and we were ready to get that big ol' crib out of there!
I think it's probably easiest to move a child to a toddler bed once he/she is walking. I think the child would have less of a chance of falling out of the bed (although, my daughter still does once in a while). Good luck! I'm sure the bed is adorable! |
