I guess there were so many people outraged by this that they are going to revisit it.

I'm so happy they are rethinking this! I'm not technically a homeschooler anymore but we feel like we do..since we teach Caeli at home. I think as long as parents are doing what they are supposed to be then we should have every right to teach our kids at home if that's what we choose.

I agree. This is right that a parent should have. I remember pulling my son out of school after 2nd grade (when we lived in Virginia) because the schools were so bad. I'd also just adopted him, so homeschooling him during his 3rd grade year was a great bonding experience for us. Homeschooling him that year gave me an opportunity to instill our family's values and morals that he wouldn't have been taught at the school he was attending. I truly felt we needed that year to really work with him. (And Trust me, this school in Virginia was BAD).
On a side note, he often hated how hard I was on him when it came to learning, but when he went back to school in 4th grade and saw that he was able to fly through his math problems because I'd already taught him what the other kids were learning, he loved it! Just because a parent doesn't have a college degree, it doesn't mean that the parent can't teach. My mom homeschooled me most of my school days and I not only got to skip a grade when placed in school during what was supposed to be my 8th grade year, but I also got the opportunity to tutor other students and graduated with honors. (In a public school). My mom did a GREAT job teaching me at home! |

It sounds to me like the system was about to make it harder for parents to be more involved in their kids' educational lives. Why does this seem to be a recurring theme?
