Does anyone have their daughters in girl scouts? My daughter will be old enough to start this fall and I would like to get some input what people think. I am concerned on weather girl scouts is keeping up with the times and teaching girls about things they will need to successed in their futures. Not just how to bake cookies and take care of kids, kwim?

I have beenin Girl Scouts for 16 years. First as a scout my self and then as a co-leader and first aid person for my sisters troop. I thinkn Grils Scouts is a GREAT thing. Dasiy's dont sell cookies, that only happens when they get to be Browines. It is not all about cookies. It teaches leaderships skills, how to be independant, make life long friends ( i am still in touch with all the girls that were in my troop). It teaches life skills that the girls can cary with them for a life time. If you want to help I know that leaders and co-leaders as always needed. If you have any questions just ask me I will try my best to help you. But in my oppion it is a great thing!!

not sure about your faith or belief in churches, some are very shaken these days, but my kids are involved in the AWANA program at our church. a lot like the scouts but faith based. they earn patches, study scripture and the lessons are age appropriate, for example, when my daughter was in the 10-12 age group, they discussed what it mean to be a lady in the 21st century. i was pretty impressed.

they start with a group called puggles for 2 and 3 year olds, but the church I attend starts with cubbies, 4 and 5 year olds. check out www.awana.com for all the details. it is a southern baptist program, but on wednesday nights, we have kids from lots of other churches attend, especially if their church does not have enough kids to support the program.

Thanks for some of the responses. I was a girl scout from brownies till Juniors, and it just seems so different, or maybe the same as when I was a kid.
Some of what has my opinion faltering is that my son is in cub scouts, and I LOVE that program. It is structured and the boys have to earn ranks to move up, its not based on age or grade in school. It just seems like it teaches more leadership and independence than what I remember in girl scouts.
The girl scouts in my area seem to making alot of crafts, baking cookies, etc. I was speaking to one mom about it who has their child in girl scouts and she seem to agree with. At day camp they decorated cookies, etc. I do know that is alot of fun, I still like doing that stuff, but I would like for my daughter to learn more leadership, morals, independence, etc., what she needs to know to be successful in the world when she becomes an adult.
But of course in a fun way much like the cub scouts do it.
