This is what I got this morning:

I am forwarding your e-mail to the City Attorney's Office for
clarification on the Gender Identity Ordinance for a response(s).
Again, thank you for your time in this matter.

Neomia Brown
Executive Assistant to the City Commission

I just received this as well:

Hi Robin,
thank you for asking the question. The nondiscrimination ordinance was indeed amended this year in Gainesville to include gender identity in its list of categories where individuals should not be discriminated against.

The claim that you were given--"any man who claimed to have gender identity issues could use the women's public restroom whenever he chooses" is nothing more than false and misleading scare tactics that are simply unjustified. The idea that "some man can just go into the woman's bathroom" is not accurate and it's a bit insulting to those who are really transgendered.

This is a link to other communities which also have the same protections:
http://www.hrc.org/issues/workplace/equal_opportunity/9602.htm <http://www.hrc.org/issues/workplace/equal_opportunity/9602.htm>

There have been no reports of such problems in Gainesville since the ordinance passed in January (which, by the way, would be illegal behavior for "some man to go into the women's restroom") nor anywhere else in the country like Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Detroit, and 90+ other communities which protect gender identity in its non discrimination clause. I am sorry that there are people who do not represent the truth on these issues--it does disservice to the real issues about discrimination at hand.

thank you for at asking my opinion on the issue; discrimination is very real for transgendered individuals in our community and I know some of them personally.

Wanted to add....before I got jumped all over for this....this is from a City Commissioner regarding the email I sent yesterday asking for clarification on the ordinance and specifically whether it meant that anyone who said they were transgender could just use whichever public restroom of their choosing. This was HER response to me.

I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST THEM. AND I DEFINITELY HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST YOU BISHOP 96 PERSONALLY OR ON YOUR VIEWS. I HAVE SEVERAL OF GAY AND TRANSGENDERED FRIENDS.
THE ONES THAT CONCERN ME IS THE PEOPLE THAT MIGHT USE THIS TO THEIR BENIFIT AND CLAIM THAT THEY ARE, JUST TO GET AWAY WITH IT.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE VERY FIRST INCCIDENT HAPPENS TO YOU AND YOUR CHILD; GOD FORBIT AND PROTECT YOU; THAT'S WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO STOP HERE NOT THE ACTUAL TRANSGENDERS. WE CAN'T SIT AROUND AND WAIT FOR SOMETHING DRASTIC TO HAPPEN TO ACT UPON IT.
MY FRIENDS (GAY) AND I HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT THIS TOPIC SEVERAL TIME. MOST OF THEM AGREE, THE ONES WITH CHILDREN BACK ME UP AND OTHERS HAVE THEIR OPINION AND I TOTALLY RESPECT IT.
I JUST LIKE FOR EVERYBODY TO REALLY THINK ABOUT THIS MATTER AND HOW IT WOULD AFFECT US AS A COMMUNITY IN THE FUTURE. IT'S KIND OF LIKE WHEN THEY LEGALIZED THE ISSUED OF ALCOHOL OR STARTED PERSCRIBING PAIN PILLS, BUT PEOPLE STARTED ABUSING IT AFTER A WHILE IT WAS ISSUED. THIS MIGHT BE SIMILAR AND WE CAN'T LET IT GET OUT OF CONTROL.

What I got from the email I received from the Commissioner was that there is a big misunderstanding surrounding this ordinance. That it revolves around workplace discrimination. I may be misunderstanding what she is saying, but she very clearly says in her email that it does not give anyone the right to use the public restroom of their choice...that a man cannot go into a women's public restroom and use this ordinance as an excuse....I agree that, that would be crazy...which is why I asked the Commission out right if that's what it meant and they say it doesn't...I am going to have to hope that they are telling me the truth.
No hard feeling at all..I think it may have been taken that why by some because your posts are in all caps...which can be taken as yelling. I didn't think so Smiler

I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THAT, BUT WITH MY DAUGHTER. SHE HAS SEVERE ALLREGIES TO PEANUTS, EGGS, MILK AND SEAFOOD. AND YOU KNOW ALL THE HORROR STORIES THERE IS ABOUT THE PEANUT INCCIDENTS; IT KIND OF FREEKS ME OUT. HUBBY AND I HAVE TO DECIDED TO HOME SCHOOL HER 'TIL SHE IS OLD ENOUGH TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO STAY AWAY FROM WHEN IT COMES TO BREAKFAST AND LUNCH TIME. SHE WOULD HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO READ LABELS FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. JUST PRECAUTION, YOU CAN NEVER BE TO CAREFUL I GUESS.
WHAT MADE YOU TAKE THE DECISION OF HOME SCHOOLING HER?
