Gainesville 4: Boy (10), Girl (7), Boy (23 months), Boy (3 months) |
I have seen this too many times to count and I always end up feeling so helpless -- a car pulls up with a load of small kids in the back, none of them in car seats. I don't want to say anything because I can already tell that as soon as I open my mouth, I am going to get cussed out. (Trust me, I did this once and that is exactly what happened.)I always end up feeling so guilty. I had heard that there was a hotline where you could report the tag numbers of people who didn't have their kids in car seats, but that may have just been a rumor b/c I never was able to track that down.
I know I am not alone. I know you have seen it, too. What do you do? <a href="http://lilypie.com"><img src="http://b1.lilypie.com/NzoMm7.png" alt="Lilypie 1st Birthday Ticker" border="0" /></a> |

This is one of those things that makes me so mad! My hubby actually saw a woman driving just yesterday and in the FRONT passenger seat there was another woman holding a baby on her lap!! I mean seriously, what are people thinking!! ARGH...it makes me so angry. My daughter used to go to a private school and I cannot tell you how many times I saw parents drive up with kids in the front seat not buckled or climbing around inside the SUV! Anyway...sorry a little tirade there...my sister mentioned to me that there is a number to call...I emailed her and asked her what it was....I will post it as soon as I hear back from her.

Ok, so I talked to my sis. She said you just get their tag number and call GPD (not 911 just their regular number). When you give them the tag number they will run it and send the car's owner a notice. It doesn't sound like much but if they should get pulled over again and the kids are not in seats, they will already have a warning on file.

That is really good to know. I wish someone would just haul the parents off, but this is probably the next best thing. And at least I feel like I am not just looking the other way. I always feel so bad about just doing nothing.
Thanks for looking into this for me!! <a href="http://lilypie.com"><img src="http://b1.lilypie.com/NzoMm7.png" alt="Lilypie 1st Birthday Ticker" border="0" /></a> |

Grand Rapids, Michigan Part time mom to 30+ needy kids all ages, all sizes, all colors |
In my neighborhood - I would get cussed out too... It's ridiculous. YOu can't take your baby home from the hospital here in Michigan at least WITHOUT having a proper car seat for them... SO - I KNOW everyone has a car seat - it's L-A-Z-I-N-E-S-S!!! That's all. Flat out laziness. sick that a parent would put their child in danger that much because of their laziness but - they also choose to smoke, do drugs and drink when they're pregnant. The latest big thing seems to be having a Meth Lab in your house with your children. We got some smart ones up here in the North country!!!

Hawthorne 3 wonderful kids! step-son (17) son (8) girl (5) |
This is defiantly good to know. I have seen it too and just wanted to snatch those parents up and beat some sense into them.
I think I will save the GPD # in my phone for future reference. Tammy |

You know what? I am going to do the same thing and store that number in my phone. The next time I see it happening, I am going to call it in and let you guys know how they handle that call. I'm sure it won't take too long for me to see this again.

I'm glad you posted this! I recently saw a woman driving badly, and when I got a better look, I noticed she was distracted by her toddler in the passenger seat (no car seat or seatbelt of course!). I didn't know if or to whom I should report it. Thanks for the advice!

So I just called GPD to see what they would say about this. And the woman told me that no, they do not send out warnings or notices. She said people should call dispatch at 955-1818, and that dispatch would send out a "BOLO" (Be on the look out) to the other officers and if anyone comes across that car, they would stop it. It's not a warning, but it's something and I'm going to keep this number in mind and call any and every time I see someone driving without a car seat. Seems like there should be more efforts in place to stop people from doing this...but like with so many other things, it is ultimately the parent's responsibility and that stinks for the kid. Although, society should put more pressure on these people.

This is one of those things that drives me nuts. Do people just not care or they don't have any common sense?! I even put my dog in his carrier if he is in the car. Distractions cause accidents.
Car seats really do save lives. Even if parents don't know how to install them (and they can be tricky), take it to a firestation. I have a paramedic/firefighter at home so we discuss this frequently. |
