Can you believe how many jobs they are cutting? I guess everyone is hurting right now. What do you think about these cuts, and who is going to feel it the most?

unfortunately, the whole city will suffer from it...mostly the students.

I think it is just wrong that they had to do these cuts. but that is the price we pay when we have wars. the war is more important than the jobs of our citizens and the education of our children.

wonder if the president took a pay cut???

I think not!! maybe they need to bring that up?

The president take a cut....ha ha! That is a good one deebird.

I have been following them closely actually. Looks like Ifas is getting hit pretty hard.

I am still trying to understand the concept of reducing the enrollment.

LAhas2boys- yes I too was wondering how cutting enrollment would help. u would think if u r going to make money, you bring in the kids, right? but then again, look many are now unemployed, so maybe due to lost of staff and instructors, they would also need to cut students too. that is my guess. but there is got to be a way to make money, loosing students is NOT the way. at least i would not think so.

wondering what is going through their brains on this issue?

i guess we may never know.

There are budget cuts going on EVERYWHERE!! I know there are more people moving out of Michigan than moving in by like a double number!!! It's CRAZY!!! However - let's take it from THIS perspective. How much has Hillary and Barack spent on the campaign trail? How many millions of dollars has it cost them to try to get elected. Think of even a portion of that money going to other things that are really needed - like elderly medications, school financing, helping hard working families who just can't live on what they make and are NOT spending friviously, etc... Think of how that might change this country over the amount of ads we have to watch on TV of the candidates.

My DH and MIL both work at Uf and the cuts are scary. I don't think I need to worry too much about him losing his job because of his position and the fact that his department is already way unstaffed. But the lack of raises hurt big time. Especially with a baby on the way.

Decreasing enrollment should help significantly. It costs UF much more to educate one student than their tuition covers. Beyond that, class size was out of hand 10 years ago when I was a student. It has only become worse over the years. It ends up hindering the quality of education when you have so many students in the system.

Bush taking a pay cut along with more of the governments staff could be a good thing.

This is all pretty scary financially. It is getting harder and harder to find full time employment, the price of things are getting higher, and if they are cutting the amount of enrollment of students, how much harder is it going to be to get into UF as a transfer student?
Ugh! I hope that this doesn't last for a really long time.

Hubby and I both work at UF and while our jobs are thankfully safe for at least another year, I agree with dragonflyfaith that the lack of raises really hurts. We've been working here 19 months and haven't had a raise and yet cost of living has increased quite noticeably. And we are expecting #2 in November so our money will be stretched even further. What gets me is how many new buildings are constantly going up on campus...why can't they just scratch those projects for a later date?

That's what I don't get. The cost of living is sky-rocketing and yet, everywhere I look, new buildings and high-end neighborhoods are being built. This doesn't make much sense to me. Who is buying these homes? Everyone is talking about a bad economy and yet, builders are still building, which I guess means that people are still buying(?)

Working in the real estate and land development industry I can tell you that people are not buying.... at least not from my company. Alot of the developers are actually going bankrupt and sadly not finishing their projects. There are 3 in Gainesville that I know of personally. And sadly because of all of it, I am looking for other employment as well. I know something has to got to give though. We can't keep living on the same wages when everything else keeps rising Confused

let me clarify -when I mentioned the "president' I meant the president of UF. After all his salary is far more than the president of usa!

lilbit-- that's what makes me crazy. The cost of living is sky-rocketing, while wages remain the same, people are losing jobs, etc. That stimulus check was all good, but really, how is it going to help us in the long run, with the bigger picture?

Something's got to give, like you said.
