I love the part where people said that other than the cross-burning into students' flesh he was the best teacher ever. WOW.

No kidding. A great teacher indeed.

And this is kind of off topic, but related to the last line in the story:
I believe in God and Jesus, but is it too unreasonable to think that maybe God created evolution too?

Many Christians believe that; it is a CATHOLIC view. Since God is omnipotent, why would it be foolish to believe that he is not reponsible for evolution? Heck, he gave us brains and free will so us humans can find cures for cancer! He can do whatever He wishesSmiler

Teachers are supposed to know what they can and can't do in a classroom. Sadly, human arrogance sometimes gets the best of us. He is an example of a bad teacher. The ones who scare me more are the ones trying to stifle free speech in the schools in the name of separation of church/state. There were quite a few examples of that a few months back. I would venture to guess that that kind of teacher abuse is much more prevalent than the opposite. Just goes to show that parents REALLY need to be involved in their children's education and stay on top of things. As a teacher, I KNOW that (sadly) too many parents don't spend time with their children even when they have it. They replace communication and TIME together with electronic gadgets and other frills. Very sad...

It is unreasonable if you believe in the same God and Jesus in the Bible....the Bible clearly teaches in Genisis that mankind was created...not evolved

"With the exception of the cross-burning episode. ... I believe John Freshwater is teaching the values of the parents in the Mount Vernon school district," he told The Columbus Dispatch for a story published Friday.

Um, are you kidding me?! Yeah, that's like saying, with the exception of him beating his wife, the guy's actually pretty nice.

I mean, he BURNT the kids, right? Wow. That is crazy.

Yes. Sadly this is my hometown too. I think what carmic1975 meant is that it is possible, and even proven, that evolution exists. Many people believe in a creation event by 1 God but also recognize that since then His creations have been growing and evolving over time changing in size, shape, and knowledge among other things.

Something different to consider about this -- just because a student says a teacher did something, that doesn't mean it happened.

Now, in this case it seems like there were several student witnesses, so that gives it some credibility. But we read stories all the time about teenagers and children commiting robberies, murders, assaults, all manner of horrible things. So when a teacher is accused of something, we can't automatically assume the teacher is guilty. After all, there are a lot of bad kids out there.

The only reason I post this is that the story struck me funny -- if this guy is such a good teacherand person, as people say, why would he do something SO EXTREME? its all very strange.

Good point, Nathaniel. I kinda saw the same thing too. There could be kid(s) that could be upset with the teacher for not giving they grades they want, normal discipline in school, etc that could cook up something like this. Kids are extremely smart and resourceful when they want to be.
Until a full case is done and a conclusion is found, it is hard to know exactly what happened and why this kid has this mark.

I agree w/ both of you on this. I am one of those people that has to have ALL of the facts before I will make a call one way, or the other. I have several teachers in my family and in my circle of friends. My hat is off to those folks...not an easy job!

You kind of have to figure too that he probably asked for volunteers too. Seems to me that there are lots of unanswered questions here. Did he describe the results before the test? Was there pain or just a discoloration? (I'm not familiar with the device in question) It would seem to me that if someone were branding me with something painful that if I were uncomfotable, I would draw my arm away. (of course I do have a tattoo..but that was my choice and I knew it would hurt a little Smiler )

This is all happening in the town that I live in, so it has been in the local newspaper and of course, has been the talk all over town since the accusations first started. It seems the situation has evolved. What started out as a teacher getting into trouble for a Bible on his desk has turned into what you read in the article. I too, am not totally convinced that he is guilty of all they make him out to be guilty of, but it is sad to see another teacher in trouble for that sort of thing. From living here and talking to others around town, it does seem like most of the town is a supporter of Mr. Freshwater or FreshH2O like the kids call him. I am not sure what the truth is but feel like the total truth will never truly be known. I love living in the small town of Mt. Vernon. It is a shame that this one bad event is what we are now known for nationally. It really is a great place to live.

We are so glad to have you long-distanced poster! I lived in Mt. V until I was 8 years old and was born at Riverside. I love that little town and visit twice a year or so. It is a small town so I know it's buzzing. I saw on Dr. Phil recently a student who accused a female teacher of sexual misconduct (consentual)fail a lie detector test. I think these accusations are happening more and more and should be sternly punished. Also, with regard to some earlier comments: If the teacher DID ask for volunteers and the students WERE willing, even then is it still OK for teachers to do what they wish?

Mr. Freshwater and Evolution

There are six types of evolution , So ! When a person asks me “do I believe in evolution” I answer with “Which One?”

Cosmic evolution ( Big Bang ) No! I do not .
Chemical evolution (higher chemical) No! I do not .
Planetary and stellar evolution (origin of the stars) No! I do not.
Organic evolution (origin of life) No! I do not.
Macroevolution (animals changing into new kinds) Most assuredly not !
Microevolution (variations within the kinds) Most assuredly Yes !

I’ll only refer to the first and the last to keep this short as possible.
The so-called “Big Bang” is where the evolutionist claims it all begins.
So! When you say you believe in evolution this is ultimately what you believe.
You believe that one day “Nothing” exploded and from that Nothingness all things began.
Now! Doesn’t that sound stupid already? Nothing plus Nothing equals Nothing . Right?

Then they go on to say that through billions and billions of years that the dust gathered together and formed the earth and it rained on the rock and formed a primordial soup and from the soup the first life crawled out.
One simple question! Didn’t this life have to find a mate so they could have off spring ?
Where did the mate come from?
Evolution is the biggest fairy tale that has ever been taught in our schools under the disguise of Science.
It has nothing to do with science.

“The word science comes from the Latin "scientia," meaning knowledge.
How do we define science? According to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, the definition of science is "knowledge attained through study or practice," or "knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, esp. as obtained and tested through scientific method [and] concerned with the physical world."

Evolution is NOT knowledge because it can not be studied or practiced and it can not be
obtained and tested through scientific method
Let’s not associate evolution with any science based on the definition of Science.
It would be like associating beer with football as they do on TV .
Do you have to drink beer to play football? No!
It is the same with Science and evolution.
So! You think your ancestor is a rock? I didn’t think so.

Microevolution -variations within the kinds
This is Science! It fits all the criteria as being science. Only this should be taught in our schools as being the true science on this subject.
We have all kinds of variation within the “KINDS” et. fish kind, amphibian kind, reptile kind and mammal kind. Just turn on Animal Planet to see how many variations of the kinds.

If the first five evaluations were true we should be able to go down to Lake Alice and walk around the shore and see all type of creatures in various stages evolving from one kind of animal to another.
But fortunately this has never been observed and it never will.

As you may have gathered already I am a creationist and believe the Bible and its entirety as being the absolute true word of God.
The Bible says six days! I believe it was literally six days. No gap theory.

There are no billions and billons of years and it can not be proven.
I have been told that God can not be proven either.
But let’s look at it this way.
The evolutionist believe we came from “Nothing”.
I believe we are the creation of almighty God.
I like my way a whole bunch better!

Did you come from Nothing ?
I think not !
One last thing

“Freshwater taught that carbon dating was unreliable to argue against evolution.”
He is absolutely correct.
That is a entirely different subject to be discussed later if you wish.

Thanks

Hmmm.....I would like to give the teacher the benefit of the doubt. We'll just wait it out to see what really happened.

I agree with Sonny Smiler Evolution is unfortunately still being taught as proven fact, although it is still just a theory with many many holes no matter how many years you attribute to it! Even if you allow trillions of years, it still goes against the laws of science (nothing can never equal something). Just my .02.
