Kristin...the link you provided said that there are no remains or bones of the child in the bag. I'm not sure what article you read that said they found her...unless fox changed the story in between that time?
mY CO-WORKER came and told us about it hours ago so we searched the Gainesville Sun and CNN waiting for some big news story and nothing. So another co-worker looked on Fox News.com and there it was. It's definitely changed big time now. Oh well. I was so hoping she was found.
My guess is they probably ran an article when the "bones" were found, then they probably had to write a new article when the remains ended up not being human.
How sad that someone would want to be dishonest about finding her remains. People are already so upset about the situation.
I was actually watching Fox news when the bags were found. The reports of bones being discovered were released with no confimation that there were any bones, much less human. The divers were hired by the bounty hunter who first posted her bond, not by police. The reporters were basically hovering around the dive team like vultures and they went live with reports and info that was not factual and should never have been reported. It wasn't that they ever actually said they found specific remains, they just found what looked like small bones, maybe fingers and toes sized, along with some toys. They really didn't intend to make the situation worse, if thats possible. The news anchors were very careful to say that the reports were uncomfirmed and should not be considered conclusive.
Just wanted to add this since I watched it unfold live. It would have ticked me off too if I only saw what you guys saw.
Wow we all know reporters are competing to get that "big scoop" but the first rule of journalism is to get your facts straight first. You never know who an incorrect story affects.
Hey Michelle, thanks for clarifying! I think my previous post might have been confusing. I'm sure the media was probably just trying to keep everyone updated as best they could with whatever information they had. My concern was more with the bounty hunter and his crew.
So since you saw the coverage Michelle, I have a question. From reading the article, it seemed like the bounty hunter and his crew were a bit dishonest in their findings, like they were trying to make a big deal about what they found when nothing had been confirmed. Did the diving crew really think they had found something important to the case?
The Fox news anchors had the bounty hunter (Leonard Padilla) on the phone during the broadcast of the findings and he very clearly stated that while he had hired the divers, he did not have any input on their "findings" and that he was merely trying to help find Caylee by providing the funds for the dive team. He went on to say that he would give the phone to the actual diver who opened the bag and let the question be put to him. That guy, whose name I forget, said the bag contained "a few" small elongated, smooth objects which could have been bones but he had no training in ID-ing bones nor did he know if they were actual bones, whether they were human or animal. They didn't appear to be flagging down the reporters, rather they were digging thru the contents of the bag. I found that a bit odd because anyone with a lick of sense would know that if you even thought you had something like human remains, you do NOT handle them you simply safeguard them and contact authorities. The diver said he never actually said there were bones in the bag, but that someone saw what they interpreted to be bones and it snowballed from there. None of the divers was trained in indentifying or recovering remains, they were just there to search for anything that might be connected. One of them may have very well gotten over excited and said something out of turn.
Is it possible that Mr Padilla enocouraged the free-for-all the press had? Sure I suppose so but the entire time the cameras were running, he was sitting in a chair under a tree and watching things unfold. I think he regrets his original involvement and is trying to do right by Caylee by helping her be found but he doesn't exactly turn away from the limelight either.
I had high hopes that there was something to the report but this kind of thing goes to show that one bad apple, or unconfirmed finding, can really spoil things for everyone. I don't mean like we are all sitting around morbidly hoping to catch a glimpse of Caylee's demise, but you know. This will just make it harder when things are really found and I am afraid it may play into the hands of the defense team as well.
Thanks for all the information, Michelle. The whole things is just such a sad situation. I really wish the family could get some kind of peace from something sometime soon.
