I saw this article in the Parade magazine today and thought it was interesting.http://www.parade.com/food/2008/11/what-america-really-eats.html

The part that I thought was funny was that 53% of the polls respondants would eat food off the floor (5 second rule!!!). But I thought it interesting that I am not alone in my "oh it smells fine" assesment of whether or not to eat something Smiler

That was a really interesting article. I found it funny how many people only consider the expiration dates on products a suggestions. I tend to also do the "smell test" once in a while.

wow that is a fun article- I for one would not eat something off the floor, we have 3 dogs who knows what they track in- haha

I noticed that we have started eating less meat- we may even consider going vegetarian, not for economical reasons though. But sometimes a yummy cheeseburger is hard to deny.

i don't think i could give up the meat altogether....i had a burger at TGIF on well Friday that was awesome. I would miss that too much!

I am a habitual smell tester, but usually there isn't a 5 second rule at my house...since the dog is usually there in 2 to snatch up whatever you dropped.

There is no way we could give up meat altogether, but I do agree that I buy so much chicken that no one wants to eat it anymore. Even me! I try to do a lot of cooking without the "prepared" foods, but the truth is I spend a lot more on food than I ought to. I have a very deep seated fear of not having enough food on hand, my Dad was the same way although he bought much less variety. My pantry would feed us for weeks but I cannot not go to Publix at least once a week. And the article says toss milk after 3 days of opening?? Are they nuts?

I am big on the smell test too even when buying food. If I don't like the smell, I doubt I will like the taste. As for the 5 second rule, it depends on the food, where it was dropped and how good it was to start with...LOL

I grew up a vegetarian and would go back to that in a minute if not for my husband. Truthfully though, for health reasons, we only cook red meat about twice a month. We do eat chicken. We get the organic chicken from publix (no hormones etc). My son eats way too many hot dogs-they are organic though. As far as expiration dates, I always forget to check them-so who knows!

We don't ever cook red meat either, LEW. My hubby never had it in his home, so we just don't eat it now. But I'll have to say, ground turkey really does taste like ground beef. I really can't notice any difference. Same with turkey hot dogs.

But maybe that's because I'm not really a meat lover. I know some people who laugh when I say they taste the same!

Turkey dogs are the best! I don't notice the difference either. Does anyone know of a good vegetarian cook book?

Stacy you're nuts Smiler I can taste the difference between ground turkey and beef. I love beef. But we don't eat it very often. We eat a lot of chicken (I try to stick to the hormone-free brands).

As far as the 5-second rule goes, I just can't do it myself. I'll sometimes let my kids depending on the item. If it's sticky and can collect who-knows-what off the ground then they can't have it. But if it's something like a pretzel then it's fine with me.

I'm also pretty picky when it comes to expiration dates. I usually consider sell-by-dates as expiration dates but my husband thinks they're fine much longer than that. Thankfully we go through milk and yogurt pretty quickly so I don't worry about having those around too long.

lol I knew someone would think I was crazy! Maybe if I enjoyed meat more I'd notice a difference. My hubby always tells me I might as well become a vegetarian. Chicken and turkey are pretty much the only meats I eat.
