So lets say you had your druthers, and you could have your ultimate breakfast. What and where would it be? A favorite eatery? Breakfast brought to you in bed?

Also, does anyone care to know what the origins of the expression "having your druthers" comes from?

I loooooove breakfast....IHOP.....anywhere, actually, that will serve me my faves. Cheese and veggie omelet, hash browns, and pancakes. Sounds like a lot, I know, but if I have all that, I usually won't eat anything the rest of the day.

I love breakfast and brunch buffets that the big hotels usually have. OMG, I could eat at those all day. Last Thanksgiving, the Holiday Inn (it's the Clarion Inn now, out by I-75) had THE BEST buffet...tables and tables and tables of every meat, vegetable side dish, fruit side dish and then THE DESSERTS....To Die For!

OK, Nate, can you tell I missed breakfast this morning? I'm sorry, I went off there thinking about food for a while.

To answer your question: YES, I would like to know the origin of "druthers"...is it just abbreviated for "I'd rather"?

I've been missing breakfast a lot lately, as well, hence the topic. Other than Chik-Fil-A the other day (where they actually have a mean biscuit and gravy) I havent had breakfast in a couple of weeks!

My mom makes the best ever sausage gravy and biscuits (we used to call them cat head biscuits because they are as big as a cat's head Smiler ) I try, but just cannot duplicate it although mine isn't bad. Maybe what makes it better is that someone else was cooking it......hmmmmm

Oh, and I love hash brown casserole at Cracker Barrel, but they changed the recipe a while back and it's just not the same

The best non-home-made pancakes EVER (in my experience) were from The Original Pancake House in Boulder, CO. There are a few here in Florida (Original Pancake Houses) but I've never been. They have fantastic omelets, and the pancakes are the type where you know that you won't be able to finish all 3 pancakes but you're sure going to try.

I remember the cozy warmth of the restaurant and being assaulted by the smell of coffee, pastries and pancakes as soon as you step inside. Watching fluffy snowflakes fall outside while sipping coffee with loved ones made it all the better.

We usually like to make chocolate chip pancakes and Belgian waffles. But I will have to say, my favorite is at Cracker Barrel - the pecan pancakes! They are so delicious with their syrup. And we just love the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant too.

Meaning from Phrases.org/UK:

(If I had my druthers); If I had my preference.

Origin

This is an American phrase and not used widely elsewhere. People elsewhere in the world might want to know what druthers are, as the phrase conveys otherwise. Druthers is a shortening of 'would rathers'. The phrase originated in the late 19th century and is first cited in the January 1870 edition of Overland monthly and Out West magazine, in a story called Centrepole Bill, by George F. Emery:

"If I was a youngster, I 'drather set up in any perfession but a circus-driver, but a man can't always have his 'drathers."

Druthers, as opposed to its earlier variant drathers, is traced back to 1876 in Dialect Notes:

"Bein's I caint have my druthers an' set still, I cal'late I'd better pearten up an' go 'long."

As for breakfast. a nice, easy drive to IHOP gives each one of us what we love...steak and eggs for me, fruit-stuffed crepes for hubby, omlets for the girl and a chocolate chip pancake for the boy. IHOP is reasonably priced and it's a delicious way to start a day! Dang, now I'm hungry!!!

I have to agree that IHOP is a pretty good breakfast. Breakfast is a good meal to eat out if you are budgeting few eating out trips....you do get alot for your money. I even get breakfast at IHOP if we go there for dinner Smiler

I'm not a huge breakfast fan, but kristin got me thinking about a cheesy potato casserole that my sister-in-law makes. It is soooo good (but probably no nutritional value....well, cheese counts towards calcium, right?).

I've never heard of druthers, so thanks to Nonny for posting an explanation.

One of my favorite breakfast foods is Baked Oatmeal.

It has coconut, dates, raisnes and milk (with salk and vanilla) added to it and backed. It is so good. I also like it with apple sauce.

I also like bisquits and sausage gravey. It not breakfast without.

Another of my favorites is like a banana split. You put peanut butter, applesauce on it and then sprinkle it with raisens and coconut and maybe some nuts. And of course before you dig into it, throw some strawberries on it. It is really good.

(you can tell we were raised in the country).

Stacy- I can make you a dish so you can try it. But you notice there is NO sugar in it. Its because the raisens, dates and coconut has its own natural sugar. The milk also helps sweetens it. Actually its good also with the Silk Soy milk (even better).

Let me know and I'll make you some the next time we meet.
