# of kids: 2-year-old daughter

I thought my daughter said "mama" and "dada" first because we were always around her, taking care of her every little need. But apparently not, according to scientists. Read about it here

The fact is, many cultures simply make up easy-to-say words with repetative sounds (mama, dada) for mother and father, which is why they are usually the first words spoken. (I am still going to believe she said "mama" first because she thought I was wonderful Smiler)

What was your child's first word? (other than mama and dada since those apparently don't count anymore lol)

My daughter said bye-bye, uh-oh, ball and bat (we visited the bat cave) around the same time.

I learned at UF that those bilabials are easiest. When my 8 week old cries it sounds like maaaaa maaaaaa and I come a runnin'! It just touches my heart so. I think when I'm actually called mama or mommy for the first time I will burst into tears regardless of what scientists and researchers say. I hear many children say "no" quickly which is really funny.

"No" was a big one in our house -- and "baseball" (odd, I know, but not if you know my brother, who is already trying to teach my 3-year-old how to be a switch hitter).

Both my boys actually said "dada" before "mama" ... it only kind of hurt my feelings. Smiler

Other than Dada (I understand the hurt feelings, Sarah!), lil' guy's first real word, used in context was Uh-Oh. He knew how to say Mama, but didn't really use it. In fact, he just started saying it recently. I choose to think that it's because I'm such a great mom, he never had to call for me - I was already there. Smiler Vain, I realize, but it makes all those long nights easier!!
