So Jack is eating his cereal pretty good but it's just so messy! I'm trying so hard to keep his hands out of his mouth, the cereal in his mouth, and everything from off the floor. I have wipes handy and since he only opens his mouth for a second, it's like a race to get the spoon in there. Do I just give it up? This makes me realize how easy breastfeeding really is...NO MESS!!!
Oh and BTW...his poops stink now! |

Gainesville 1- Kaylee (18 months) |
It just takes a little bit of time. Once he gets used to eating solids and you get used to feeding him solids it becomes less messy. My husband and Kaylee were both a mess when he would feed her. I got some cute pictures of Kalee's first rice ceral experience. They are too cute. Now she mostly feeds herself which is messy. The link is to photos of Kaylee's first adventure with the rice ceral.

lol....yes Mary it is just really messy when you start. Seems no matter what you do that stuff just gets everywhere. See if this makes you feel better. This picture is Grace with one of her first meals. I actually resorted to having someone hold her to keep her in a more upright position...I am a clean freak when it comes to my kids but if you can see it in the picture she has oatmeal in her nose and on her eyelashes...hopefully some went in her mouth too!

Max is going to be starting cereal towards the end of the month. I'm so sad! He's growing so fast.
It's going to be hard not to freak about the mess, I'm a neat freak too. Good luck! -Amy |

It's a new thing. Like riding a bike, it's going to be kind of messy at first. But oh so cute. And if you think this is messy, wait till you give him his first biter biscuit. Or the first birthday cake. Just have that camera out at feeding time! You will need something to show his future wife! I know I love looking at the pics of my hubby
Don't forget, babies explore with their mouths and him putting his hands in his mouth will prepare him for that motion when it comes time to learn to self-feed. |

My son is almost 2 and he is still a very messy eater. He will usually start out eating with a fork or spoon, but by the time we are almost done he is shoveling it in with his hands. I guess he gets frustrated trying to get things to stay on the silverware. I will have to post recent pics from our trip to the zoo. We got him an ice cream cone, and he got it everywhere. LOL If you think cereal is messy just wait!

Oh, Caryn, those biter biscuits are the worst!! We never even offered them after that first messy time -- we had to scrub him in the bath for a good 10 minutes to get it all off!

Oh I hear you all on the biter biscuits!
My daughter definitely made some messes when she first started eating (and she still sometimes makes messes!) Here are some pictures of when she was younger. |

Stacy that is terrifying! LOL! I love those pics! Jack still doesn't realize he has to open his mouth for more than a second and ends up just sucking it in. However, I discovered a GREAT secret that works!
Jack was doing the hand thing and I had given him a spoon to hold but he kept hitting my food-filled spoon and making a mess so I gave him a napkin to hold in one hand and a little wash cloth in the other! He bangs them on the tray and pushes them into his mouth and essentially wipes his mouth FOR me! It rocks! |

See Mary - you already have new tricks! Messy eating is going to happen, and I hate it more than almost anything, but I am trying to learn to relax and keep lots of stain removers (clothes and carpet) on hand!
Oh, you think cereal diapers are bad? Wait for the "real food" ones, and oh the colors!! LOL |

What a good idea, Mary! I know exactly what you mean about them wanting to hit your food-filled spoon. Good thinking! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Stacy Fournier, |
