2-year-old daughter |
I received an e-mail from a more quiet GainesvilleMom today, and she wanted me to share a great resource she found with you all. The mom's 2-year-old wears glasses, and she said the blog little four eyes is a great read for parents who have children that wear glasses. Link
Does anyone have a child who wears glasses? |

Ours don't wear them yet, but as bad as both of our eyes are I imagine it is just a matter of time. Of course, I am major nearsighted and Lon is even worse but farsighted so maybe they lucked out and hit the middle and will be fine! Lon wore glasses starting in elementary school and I started wearing them in 8th grade, switched to contacts by 9th and worn them ever since. Then again, with all the advancements in eye surgeries, they may be able to get them corrected at the mall one day, right between the teeth whitening and the Pro-Activ kiosks...

I've worn glasses since I was 10. As a child I was not happy about it and at 14 switched to contacts. I did those for about 10 years before happily returning to glasses. I personally feel more confident in glasses. Although I have the option to do the surgery, I'm not ready to give up my "face jewelry" just yet.

Third generation Gainesville native! 4 - Three daughters and a son. |
My little brother, who will be 39 this month, wore glasses from the time he was about 6 months old. Tiny little pink frames were all they had that would fit his baby face. I can remember the family-wide searches for the hidden glasses as he got older! The really funny thing (now) is that he never used the same hiding place twice -- even as a toddler!
My oldest daughter didn't get glasses until she was about 20. The second oldest daughter has worn glasses since she was about 4 years old. My son got his first pair in high school. Knock on wood, my youngest daughter doesn't seem to have any vision problesm, but she's only 4 years old, so we'll see. I had eye surgery when I was almost 5 to correct a lazy eye problem and I lucked out didn't need them until I was about 19. Now, at 43, I am wearing my first pair of bifocals and let me tell you girls, they took some getting used to! |

I started wearing glasses in 1st grade. I switched to contacts in middles school. Then, right around the time I started High School, I was able to give them up completely because my eyes had corrected themselves. I was told at the time though that most likely my eye sight would worsen over the years. So, once hubby's new insurance kicks in January first, I'll be making everyone appointments...Hubby's eye sight is TERRIBLE! I'm sure the kids will be needing glasses eventually.

Two boys, ages 3 and 1 |
Hubby and I both started wearing glasses when we were in 6th grade -- maybe that's why we bonded so much that year, we both felt so awkward with our nerdy glasses!
I'm sure that means it's inevitable that our boys will have to get them at some point. So far no eye issues though -- except my 3-year-old has one pupil (the black part of his eye) that is bigger than the other. It's harmless, but it's really weird when you look him in the eyes. |

Not yet. I started wearing glasses in the 6th grade and my husband needs them now. So we shall see if Kaylee needs them.

NW Gainesville 3 boys (1-3 y/o and 2 -1y/o's) and a step-mom and step-grandma, too! |
No, mine don't, but then again, my oldest is only 3, so it's still early.
I started wearing glasses for nearsightedness in 5th grade. And like others, I'm legally blind without corrective lenses. I started wearing contacts in 10th grade and have worm them ever since. However, now that I am apparently sitting squarely in middle age, I have to use reading glasses for up close work. I miss my 20s. Jam [url=http://mommamoesblog.blogspot.com/url] |

I didn't get mine till I was 18 ish and Micah got his when he was in HS. Strangely, I started out farsighted and actually changed to near sighted later on. Micah was so nearsighted that he couldn't even see the big E. That's worse than 20/400! He had lasik a few years ago and the transformation is amazing. He feels so much better about himself and I really notice his eyes are beautiful! My eyes aren't that bad. If I lost my glasses, I would be fine for a few days...not like I'd need an emergency trip to lens crafters...
I'm sure that the kids will need them eventually, but hopefully not untl they are much older like we were. I too think glasses are so cute...I just love little Aaden on Jon and Kate... |

2-year-old daughter |
I got glasses in 4th grade, pretty much just for reading. But as I've gotten older, I've gotten really bad about wearing them. I can see just fine without them, I just tend to get headaches once in a while. I guess I should go find them, dust them off, and start wearing them!

I have worn glasses since I was 10 years old. My eye sight is really bad...can't see a darn thing without them. I got contacts in the 10th grade because the weight of my glasses would give me a headache. My husband has also been wearing glasses for a long time. His eye sight is no where near as bad as mine. My step daughter started wearing glasses when she turned 9 as well. Her sight isn't too bad...maybe she will be like her dad. I hope that my sons sight isn't as bad as mine, but he would look so cute with a little pair of glasses.

My 2 year old was diagnosed with Amblyopia at an early age and is now in glasses. The website Link has tons of information for parents. I would also encourage all parents to get their children's vision screened at an early age. InfantSEE is a program that provides free vision screenings to children under 1 and there are providers in Gainesville. Link If you do have kids in glasses, after searching many places high and low - the optometrist in Thornbrook village is AMAZING and I would strongly encourage parents to visit him as he has the best selection of children's frames, a childrens play area and a gentle and kind disposition!
