The DVD of "Nim's Island" comes out in stores today. I got to see it a few days ago, and thought I would post a mini-review here for anyone that was thinking about picking it up.

Story: Abigail Breslin (aka Little Miss Sunshine) is a smart little girl who lives on a remote island with her dad (Gerard Butler aka He Who Makes Women Swoon). Her best friends are smart animals, and life is idyllic. Well, during a wicked storm Dad gets lost at sea, and Nim is left all alone. She asks her favorite writer (Jodie Foster, who was playing MUCH more risque roles when she was this age) to come and help her. So while Nim has adventures, her dad and the author both journey to make it to the island and help her.

Content: There is not much in this movie to worry a parent. Aside from a couple of scary thunderstorms, everything is pretty well nice and sweet and calm. No swearing, or adult-type situations to worry about. However, a great deal of the movie is NOT centered on Nim, but on the grown-ups, and these parts of the movie are boring. I thought so, and my 3 year old especially thought so.

Overall: There's nothing objectionable about "Nim's Island" It just isn't very good. Not BAD, just not anywhere near as good as, say, "The Last Mimzy"

Check out the Sun on Thursday for a full review of this movie.

Thanks Nate. Of course my boys aren't interested. But we've got a 7-year-old girl living next door who's been waiting for this to come out. It's 10 a.m. and her mom is probably on the way to the video store right now. Smiler

It amazes me how my daughter still goes for movies I think she's outgrown. We saw Wall-E recently and most times she'd rather see an animated film over others.

I love Abigail Breslin, but I don't think the movie does her talent justice.
