My Ellie is 3 months and 3 weeks old. She has her next doctor's appointment at the beginning of June so I thought I'd ask my question here. She seems to be teething, although I don't see any teeth coming out of the gums yet, just a little jagged edge right under the skin where one of her upper front teeth will eventually be. The rest of her gums, I can feel a hard ridge under the gums but not a jagged edge.

She also wants to chew on things. She chews on her burp towels, the nipple of her bottle, my finger, her fingers and knuckles, the front of her clothes, the pacifier.

Could she be getting a tooth already? I have several baby books and one says it's possible but doesn't offer much information on what to do for teething.

Babies start teething long before the tooth actually is seen. What I used to do was give my babies frozen waffles, wet washcloths that I would keep in the refrigerator, chunks of ice in one of those baby safe feeders (the ones that are like a pacifier only with a netting so you can give chunks of food without baby chocking), those teething biscuits, and teething tablets. (I can't remember the name brand, but they are the all natural dissolving tablets you can get anywhere. Came in a white/clear bottle with a pink and blue label)
It's been a few years since I've had teething babies, but this is what I remember.

The teething tablets I get are Hylanders I think. Same colored bottle and label. Wink They are awesome!

I agree with the other responses. My son was "teething" long before he got his first teeth in. Around the same time as yours. He didn't actually start getting teeth in until around 9 or 10 months old though. I too liked the teething tablets. The mini blankets and books with the rubber raised surface are great.

It sounds like the first tooth! My babies all cut their first tooth around 4 months old.

My oldest started teething 6+ months, but the baby?! OMG started teething way early like yours! She just turned a year and has almost all of her teeth, usually getting 2-4 teeth at a time.

So you are not alone! For the most part I have stuck to the norms my mom always told me about....
The waffles are great, built in drip cups. Washcloths in the fridge..(careful not to freeze them, you don't want frost bite)..teething rings in the fridge (the really squishy ones, not the tougher ones they are coming out with), nipple from bottles (still on the bottle sometimes, refrigerated some times, the big avent ones are great too)...pacifiers, clothing... anything you can find that is safe.. my baby's fave right now is her blankets, she gnaws and tares at them like a wild animal.

Good luck!

Definitely sounds like teething to me. You've got some good suggestions here. My youngest like to chew on his socks whenever his little gums are bothering him -- it makes for soggy feet!

Oh, yeah, the teething starts waaaaaay before you can ever feel or see them coming...I always know because they drool like a river!

My youngest has picked up a strange way to relieve the pain of teething: he chews on the rubbery-gripped end of a toothbrush, and sometimes on the bristle end, too! I don't think it can hurt, and if nothing else, I'm hoping it builds a friendly relationship between baby and brushing later on!

Thanks for all the tips! Right now she is most enjoying teething on a baby washcloth with my finger stuck inside of it. Soft on the outside, a little tougher in the middle, but she doesn't get to do that much as she is going to flatten out my finger Smiler

We just bought a soft gummy teething ring to put in the fridge and I'm going to try it tonight.

Thanks again. I have lots of ideas to try now.
