Just curious. We brought this up in another thread. So, what is the cut-off for breastfeeding for most moms? How did you guys know it was time to stop breastfeeding?

I quit at 7 months but only because my body quit for me. Kristi was sleeping throught the night and with the hours that I was working at the time all I was doing was pumping. After a few weeks of just pumping production pretty much stopped. I was upset because I wasn't ready yet.... I really wanted to go the full first year. I don't think I had set a limit on when to stop though. I think that really is an individual thing with each parent and child.

I didn't have much luck with breastfeeding either of ours. With my oldest we breastfed for around 3 months. She was 9 and a half pounds when she was born and it seemed no matter how much she ate she was still hungry. With Logan, I had a hard time breastfeeding. When I was in the hospital we had the LC come in (that didn't go well..we didn't mesh well at all) and I was producing nothing! No colostrum, nothing. My milk came in a little but it never seemed like much. After 2 days in the hospital and him not getting much, we finally gave him a bottle and he fell right to sleep. I did try to bf when we got home but it just wasn't working....

Hawthorne 3 wonderful kids! step-son (17) son (8) girl (5) |
I didn't have much luck with my son. Lots of L&D complications.
I bf'ed my daughter for 3.5 years. Here is part of what I write under the JLo topic about this "To start with, most parents know that you don't make an major changes when there are major family stresses/changes happening. So with that in mind, I had planned on weaning her at 12 months. Then her dad and I starting having problems in our marriage. It was at this time he asked for a divorce. So I thought I would have her done by 18 months. But then it was at this time we moved from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba back here, Gainesville and I had to start all over. So my next goal was by 2. But again, another major change. We found a place to live and I had to know unpack a house and get a steady income going while dealing with the legalities and emotional part of divorce. It was a year later before the divorce was settled. At this time, my daughter was 3 and was breastfeeding only at night. When my husband, then boyfriend moved in, he helped me finished weaning her since when she would bf'ed at night, I didn't even know or was aware of her latched on. He is a night owl and was know when she would crawl into bed with me and he would take her and put her back in her bed." Tammy |

Tammy, thanks for sharing. I responded to the J-Lo thread! I really appreciate you being so open about your bf'ing experience with your daughter!

In the beginning I supplemented with 1 bottle of formula/night. I would pump a bottle of breast milk to freeze while DH would feed LO a formula bottle. I wanted to build up my stash of BM - but my BM doesn't freeze well - it has too much of an enzyme so when thawed it tastes like soap - gross. I hated pumping and didn't want to spend the $$ on formula, plus after a 2 week vacation, LO started refusing the bottle. So straight from the "tap" after 4 months. DS is nearly 14 months and nurses 3xday. I hope to keep nursing until he is 2. I never thought we would nurse longer than 12 months (that is the "magical age" most people wean). But I really believe in the health benefits of nursing for LO and it has definitely helped me lose the baby weight - so a plus for mom too.

My daughter is 11 months old and she nurses at night mainly. Every now and then if she is really cranky she will nurse during the day. It is more comforting for her than anything I think. My son who will be 8 years old in June only nursed for about 5 months. My body couldn't keep up with his heafty appetite so we supplemented bottles as well and he took to the bottles from that point on!!! So I have really enjoyed my daughter nursing at least this long. In the beginning I thought it was going to be another hard battle of breastfeeding because she only really prefered the right side but eventually she adjusted and hasn't stopped since! Good Luck with your new bundle of Joy!!
