3 boys: Caleb (6), Tyler (3), and Ethan (6 wks.) |
I just wanted to suggest to parents the PBS Shows, I just recently found the channel. I don't let my 3 year old watch much TV but he was a big Disney fan. I was looking for something a little more educational when I came across the PBS Channels. Favs are Sid the Science Kid, SuperWhy! and Word World and he LOVES them also!! It's a WIN WIN!! It's aggravating that you can't find anything educational in children's cartoons anymore even if it is hidden behind humor, they have all become useless...needless to say I'm not a Spongebob or Rugrats fan...lol!

I love those shows!
PBS in them morning and Dora are the only shows I really let my daughter watch (of course, I don't have cable, so we're very limited anyways). My sister has a son who will be 2 next month, and after watching those shows every morning, he can name about 20 letters of the alphabet! I also like to run the shows on during breakfast time for my daycare, it's good, fun, educational TV that the children can learn from more than sitting there just eating. It's GREAT! ~Wendy~ |

I get a big giggle when Macy will say something (correctly) to Daddy in Spanish and she learned it all from Dora and Diego! He knows no spanish (aside from "mas cerveza") and actually got a copy of Rosetta Stone so he could learn because he was tired of being showed up by a three year old! Of course, having the lessons doesn't work unless you USE them, but he did make the first step.
I know our kids watch WAY too much TV and I feel bad about it, but at the same time, it isn't all mindless drivel and Macy has learned a lot of stuff from watching. Even Zane is picking up on certain words and songs and as long as that is happening, I have a hard time finding fault. Yes, I wish the theme songs were not stuck in my head, but other than that I am fine with it. |

I will have to keep those PBS shows in mind! My daughter usually watches the Disney channel - Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Little Einsteins, etc. which I like because they definitely have educational value. She also really enjoys Dora, too. We don't watch much TV during the week since my daughter is in preschool for part of the day, but we do enjoy some morning cartoons on Saturday.

My son is now in preschool 5 mornings a week, so we can't watch some of his favorites like SuperWhy.
However, if you have cable, you have the "On Demand" option (Channel 1 on Cox). They have shows from "PBS Sprout" which is the PBS channel catering to preschoolers. There are some great shows there, including one from Great Britain called "Fireman Sam". My son loves it! Also, Thomas the Train and Sesame Street are available there. Some Noggin shows are on On Demand too, as well as other learning and entertaining shows. Go down menu to "Freezone", then to Kids and you'll find them all. What's nice is your child can watch them at any time - you don't have to wait until the stations are broadcasting them. Many of the shows are 2 or 3 short episodes, making them perfect for entertaining my son for 10 minutes while I get ready to take him to school. Best of all is very little advertising! There is a brief ad just before your show starts, and then that is it. |

My children LOVE Word World! At 3, when it first aired, in about a week my daughter was spelling pig, sheep, dog and so on!! She also loves Word Girl! And here is a perfect example of why you should let your children watch these shows:
At one of our usual gatherings at my parents house my brother in law asked her to go get the cooler, knowing it's way too heavy for her, she goes over to the cooler, attempts to pick it up and comes back. My BIL asks with this huge grin on his face "Well, where's the cooler?" Kiara says "I couldn't bring it!" BIL asks why and she says "Because it's too cumbersome!" Everyone was just floored! There where even a couple of people, adults at that, ask "What did she say" or "What does that mean?! She has picked up so many new and exciting words just watching that show! |

That is too adorable! I think some shows out there are definitely educational and beneficial. I don't let my daughter watch much TV, but I don't see anything wrong with a show here or there. They really can pick so much great stuff up from those shows! |
