My hubby and I were talking in the car today about Halloween candy and the rumors that used to go around. I remember hearing about blades in candy and other harmful things. I can even remember my mom going through my candy as a child to make sure everything was safe.
Did you ever hear any of these stories? Do you get concerned about any of it? |

There have been some recent recalls of a popular candy sold in Asian markets. It is called White Rabbit Candy. The problem with the candy is that it is contaminated with melamine as it has the tainted Chinese milk powder in it. Our family recently purchased this candy and we ended up at our peditrician's office having kidney functioning tests performed. You may want to do a google search to see a picture of these individual wrapped candies to make sure that your children don't receive them accidently in the Halloween candy. The candies are milk flavored and various fruit flavors and have a picture of a small rabbit on them.

I have heard these stories, and also, snopes.com confirms that it has happened. You never know what people may do now-a-days. Just to be extra safe, we take our candy to the hospital, and they perform an x-ray of all the candy, to see if there is anything hidden, at no cost. It's scary to think that such an innocent children's activity could go fatally wrong.

I remember hearing those stories when I was a kid, but don't recall ever reading any true happenings of them.
One time when we were kids we went to a house in the neighborhood and the little old lady there gave us apples because she was out of candy. We of course thought they were poisoned, and growing up always thought that was the lady who tried to poison us. Come to find out later, that was my high school (and still) best friend's grandma! She was the sweetest old lady Marianne |

I have always heard the stories and of course wonder if or when it might happen to someone I know so I came up with what I hope will work since Macy is getting into the spirit of things. Whatever she gets, we will inspect as best we can but anything I am concerned about or that has been identified as a potential problem or even has a torn wrapper, all of that will go back in her bucket and we will put it out for the "Halloween Fairy" who picks up extra candy to take to the people wo didn't get any. I bought some extra this year so she will still have treats but I know for sure they are okay.
Really a sad commentary on things, I remember when we were kids we ate half of the candy before we got back home! And we didn't have to have parents go with us because everyone knew everyone and it was okay to go door-to-door. I miss that atmosphere something awful. |

That is awful! I am so sorry to hear that your family had to go through all that. Thanks for the helpful information. I'll definitely be checking for any of those candies. |

I didn't realize you could take your candy into the hospital! That is so neat. Will any hospital do it? |

Just remembered this - down here there was a problem with candies sold at the everything is a dollar type stores. There were very sharp bits of metal machinery embedded in the candies and fortunately one Mom saw a piece sticking out before giving any candy to her kids. I don't recall if it was Halloween then or not, but just be really careful with whatever you get or give. I know the dollar type stores didn't know the candy was "defective" in that manner and they pulled all of it right away, but a lot of people think "hey why pay more than a dollar for a whole bag if I am just giving it away?" and they never check the quality. Yes, it could happen in Wal Mart or any store but I know this happened here.

I think we talked about this in another thread, but yes I know this was an issue in the early days (ok...the 60's 70's and 80's) but don't know if it is still going on.
I remember as a kid finding a blade in one of our apples. It was horrible. Fortunately for us, we cut the apple first instead of biting into it. I think it is sad that people can be so cruel and manufacurers are not as careful enough for the safety of our children. |

Actually I think the most dangerous candies are the ones I like, somehow I always find a reason to pull those from the stash...
