So, the LPGA announced that is will now require its golfers to speak English fluently or face suspension. Is this fair/ethical?

Personally, I get very frustrated when workers/business owners do not speak good English. I understand visitors and tourists since I have gone to other countries and struggled but if you're going to own a business please own the language of its customers.

Mary, I would say that YES it is fair, and YES it is ethical.

I'd take it a step further, and say there is no ethical component to it. Political Correctness has bene around for so long that we start to feel bad for thinking that people should speak the language of the country in which they live and/or work. But to me, this is just common sense.

If I'm going to go work a job in France, I would not be so arrogant as to assume everyone would speak English. And if they didn't, then I wouldn't file a lawsuit to MAKE them speak my language.

But here in the States its a little different, and we will no doubt be getting a lawsuit against the LPGA about this situation.

But personally, I'm old fashioned: If I come to your house, I'll obey your rules. If you come to my house, I expect the same consideration.

Well I had to call the Social Security Administration for a replacement card and had to press 1 for English. I thought that was stupid.

I read the other day that the US does not have an official language so maybe this is something we have to get used to. People who spoke English used to be the majority, now maybe not so much. I guess majority rules.

As far as the LPGA goes. It is an association. If they want to make as part of the rules a language requirement, I think that's fine. Just like employers who will not hire smokers or require a second language.

I love hearing other languages spoken on campus and at Disney and stuff. It's beautiful. I just want my doctor to explain what's wrong with me in clear English...and the hotel clerk and the receptionist...
