I'm looking into different ways of making some extra money once I get to Gainesville. I was a secretary previously, but looking into the cost of daycare combined with gas I'm not sure I will be making enough money to make going back to work worth it. I have applied to some positions including some at UF, but in case nothing works out, I was wondering about possibly taking on a couple of kids during the day.

Has anyone else done this before? Is there anything I should think about prior to doing this? What would you pay to have your children in a home with only 2 other children? What would you pay to have someone come in to your home and babysit? I would love whatever feedback you have. Thanks!

The going rate to watch two toddler age children(in the children's home) w/o having kids of your own seems to be between 350.00-500.00 per week (M-F 8-5). I would imagine that having your own children may reduce the rate as that is more of a group day care situation. I am not sure what the group rates are in Gainesville. I am interested to see what others have to say regarding this question. BTW-welcome to Gainesville! It is a great community!!!!

Hey Casmly,
I just wanted you to know that I just heard about a receptionist position that has just come up at a really great company, just in case you are looking. You could always just submit your resume just in case. If you want the info, let me know.

Thanks for the information LWhitehurst! I've also started thinking that maybe taking on students after school would be something to think about. I believe it was this site that someone mentioned not liking to leave their older child at home alone. I could possibly take children after school for 2 - 4 hours a day...feeding them a snack, helping them with homework etc. So, again, any feedback people can provide on this would be wonderful! What would you be willing to pay weekly?

just an FYI - the after school programs run by the county are $40/week for full pay students. students who receive reduced or free lunch pay a reduced amount. there is typically a waiting list at most schools.

private after school programs are much higher.

I have a 4 yr old and a 1.5 year old. I will need after school care in my home in two years. We plan on hiring someone to work from 2-5. I am not sure what we are willing to pay as I do not know what the going rate will be by then. I have a friend who pays someone 12.00 an hr to work 2-5 M-F to watch to elementary school age children, do homework and start dinner for the family. She also drives the kids to some activities after school w/ her own car.

I had a wonderful friend that watched Kristi from the time she was 6 months old until just a couple weeks ago (she's almost 2) and we paid her $120 a week for 7:30 till 4 Monday thru Thursday. I think for an at home situation, if there are only a few kids, it's reasonable to expect more pay.
