It is getting ridiculous! You are right, $20 for really cheap looking costumes.
I didn't take a real good look at them, but the party store on 13th street next to the Goodwill had some costumes for younger kids. I believe the one I happened to pick up was $13.00. A little better any way.
I have found that Children's Place and other stores along those lines have costumes of better quality and they are usually $20 - $30. A lot better than paying the same amount for a costume that will fall apart right away.
I am making the kid's costumes this year. G wants to be hulk and J wants to be Pikachu. I just bought a green shirt and purple stretch pants for making the Hulk costume and a yellow shirt for Pikachu. I will just have to stuff G's costume so he'll look like Hulk. I'll have to be a bit more creative with Pikachu, but it should turn out ok.

I have no idea what to do for my baby either. I have a sewing machine so I may look at patterns this weekend. I don't want to spend $20 for something cheap looking either. My co-worker said her daughter went as an M & M one year and it was a really easy costume to sew so I'm thinking about that.

I ended up buying a 6-12 month baby Yoda costume from Center Stage. Everyone in my family loves Yoda and this in the first grandkid. So I know when we have more or when my brother has kids they'll be Yoda for their first halloween, even if it swallows them whole!

maybaby that is so cute! My little nephew is also going to be a little baby Yoda. His sister is Princess Leia and the brother is Darth Vader. My daughter was a lady bug for her first Halloween when she was about 7 months. We got it from Children's Place. She looked so cute! But I agree, it is a little ridiculous how much costumes cost these days. But when the kids get a little older, at least you know they can keep using them to play dress-up!

I buy felt at Joanns and use it to create costumes. It doesn't run, you can glue it if you don't sew, it holds it's shape and it is sturdy. You can make lady bugs, flowers, puffy superheros,a domino, a playing card,a pumpkin,a spider, It is fast and easy to work with. I won a costume contest one year with a spongebob costume I made.

My daughter was born in November so almost one by her first Halloween, but I made her a quick and easy "cave baby" costume. I bought some leopard print fur and basically sewed a quick one shouldered dress with two seams on the sides. I cut the bottom with a jagged edge - so no hemming. Then I took a remnant piece of fake bear fur and made a quick shawl with a fake bone button . It turned out really well and even though I sewed it by hand it only took about an hour or so. She is almost 3 this year, and I had to get a sewing machine to try the cat in the hat. The hat and tie are done - but I haven't started on the cat suit yet.
