Do you allow your kids to drink soda? Why, or why not?

No, we don't. I grew up drinking Pepsi and it is such a hard habit to break....it is one of the worst things for you (no nutritional value, bad for your teeth, etc) and I still drink it! I have gone through periods where I would purposely try to not drink it but I always come back to it. We figured if we didn't introduce them to it then they wouldn't want it. It has worked so far...they both think it's gross (I think it's the carbonation) Hopefully, it will stay that way....

My 3 year old has never had soda, it's water, juice/water mixed or milk for her. My two teens do not drink soda at home at all. I do allow them to drink it at restaurants and I know sometimes unfortunately they get it at school.
We just think its better not to get them used to drinking so much soda. Its not that good for you. We don't ban it all together we just don't keep it around for casual drinking. |

2-year-old daughter |
My daughter pretty much only gets water, milk or a juice/water mix. Her grandpa snuck a little sip of Sprite in her sippy cup once, and the look on her face was priceless. (I knew something was different in there!) I don't think she was too found of it. But if your child is older and does like the taste, I'd save it for a special treat.

it's never really been an issue. i'm a coke a cola kid so there was always coke in my fridge but my children have always preferred water or gatorade. now that they are older, when they do drink soft drinks, they chose sprite to avoid the caffeine. my children are self imposed health nuts, they constantly worry about how something will affect their game! where they got that from is beyond me!!!

Stacy, I know exactly the look you're talking about. My son snuck a sip of my Coke one time (that's pretty much the only way he gets soda) and he wasn't at all prepared for the "bubbles."

In our house we only keep water, milk and juice. Sodas are a treat and something my 2 1/2 year old looks forward to as a treat sometimes.
And he doesn't even get juice on a regular basis just a few times a week cut with water. |

My husband and I drink waaaay too much Diet Coke. But our kids are usually only allowed to have it as a special treat when we eat out. On occasion they'll have Sprite or something at home. They usually just have water or milk.

My kids don't get soda at home unless it's a sip of mommy's every now and then. I don't even keep it in the house on a regular basis for me, let alone them. I will let them order it on occasion at restaurants or let them have it at parties. Moderation with everything is key if you ask me.

Wisconsin 1: Girl (7 months) |
My daughter's only 4 months old, so no soda for her(!) but my husband and I don't drink it either, except sometimes when we go out to eat. My parents always had a case of soda in the house when we were growing up and we drank it all the time, almost every day after school and especially in the summer. My sister went to the dentist a few years ago and had 5 cavities at once! But then my brother never had a cavity in his life. He says it's because Wisconsin tap water has fluoride in it. But either way we don't drink it anymore.
