Yeah Aimee!!!!! I'm so proud of you. Are you going to get working at your job? and may I highly recommend their online and night classes too if you are going to get working? That's what I did before going on to get my 4 year.

Yes, I'm still going to be working. I'm cutting down to 32 hours a week once classes start. One of the classes I'm taking is a hybrid class, which means it's partly an online class. I'm a little hesitant to take online courses though b/c a) I tend to be easily distracted, & b) I just feel like with my learning/study habits that actual lectures better suit me.

I'm hoping to be ready to apply for the RN program at SF next May (assuming I pass the remaining pre-reqs I need, which is what I'm taking in the Spring). If accepted, I'd start the program in the Fall. It's a very competetive program though, so there's no guarantee I'll get in first try but I'm staying positive!

Congrats, Aimee! I am also planning on applying for the RN program in May. That would be neat if both of us got in!
Not to discourage you, but I have a friend who just got in in August. She applied for two consecutive terms and got in in the second one. She has As and Bs. It is very difficult to get in to, so keep your grades up and you should be fine. I'm hoping to get in in May or August '09.
Good luck!

That is great! To keep you positive I went through the RN program at SFCC and I got in on my first try. It was like five years ago, but still very competetive then. I had A's and B's and very little work experience. (I was only 20!) You can do it though, my daughter was one when I started. Nursing is a great feild. Lots and jobs and flexible hours. I have it made with my schedule. I love being a nurse.

Yea, I'm aware of how competitive it is. Last May more than twice as many people applied to the program as were accepted, so... I'm not going in with any false hopes, I know there's a good chance I could have to apply more than once. I do have a 3.75 GPA right now & hope to at least keep it there (or bring it up) next term, so that's a plus. However, it's not just grades they look at, it's completely point based, so the GPA alone isn't going to get me in... We shall see! Like I said, I'm staying positive!

Having one car & no childcare would pretty much make that impossible... I had to squeeze all my classes into two days/evenings so that Daniel can still work at night & not have to ask for too many days off.

It's encouraging to hear someone else with a toddler made it through the program! That's one thing that has me bit hesitant... Not having enough time to spend with the little guy (& husband) the next couple years! What area of nursing are you in?
Oh yea, Misty... Are you taking any of the pre or co-reqs in the spring? Just wondering if we might have a class together! I'm taking A&P, Developmental Psych, & Elements of Chem (have to take it in order to take Microbiology in the summer).
I too am planning to go back to school for RN. I start in Jan, and it is going to be a trial. I have all the pre-reqs to take first, but I hope I get in my first try. I can't afford to cut back on work seeing that I am a single mother of three. I need to work full time, so I am looking at trying to take some online courses so i don't have to eb away from home so much. Good luck with all that.

Yea, I could only cut back from 40 to 32 hours b/c I'm the "bread winner" of our household. My husband is a SAHD & works evenings part-time. The small bit of financial aid we received is the only reason I can cut back at all. I'm nervous about when I actually get into the program b/c they recommend you work no more than 15 hours a week b/c the program is so intensive but I really don't see how that will be possible. Private student loans would be one option... if my credit didn't suck. I'm determined to make it work though! I'm sick of working a job for a paycheck... I want to do something that makes a difference & that I really want to do. As far as the pre-reqs go, I actually only have two left but I can't take one of them until I take Chemistry, otherwise I'd have all the pre-reqs out of the way by the end of spring term. I'll still be able to apply for the program for next fall though, as long as I pass the spring classes I've registered for. Which, of course I will! And with all A's, no less!
And Kristin, I just might take you up on your offer for help! I haven't taken any science classes since high school! Actually, I did take a pscyh class for my last degree & I passed that no problem so I'm not too worried about Dev Psych. The Chem & A&P are making me nervous though!
Hey, to answer your question, I am a pediatric nurse. I work at Shands in the Central Staffing Office, which is where you can basically make you own schedule, you can work 4, 8, or 12 hour shifts, day, nights, or evenings, but you have to work in teh area they need you, like whatever floor is short. I work in the peds pool so I only work with pediatrics or in the ER. I also do homecare for one little boy, which is also very flexible, i just work my hours out with the family. (I work about 30 hours a week between the two jobs.) I love it, I can still be at everything I need to with the kids, but I still get the hours that I need. One, thing you may want to look into, is a scholarship/grant that I got in nursing school. It was called the workforce investment act, I don't know if they still have it, if you qualify, they pay for everything. Including tuition, books, uniforms, nursing license. Then I still got financial aid and used it to pay bills, etc. Sorry this is so long, I guess i had a lot to say.

Pediatrics is where I'm thinking I'd like to work too... I'm not 100% sure yet but that's what I'm leaning towards. And I hope to find a position similar to yours, that's flexible with hours. I'm definitely going to look into the workforce investment act. Thanks for the info!
