You won't ;et the oil companies drill off the Coast of Florida, You don't want them to build a refinery in Florida. You complain about how much money they make, but thier profit margins are a lot closer than the Coke Company. So pay up and don't complain.

Wow, I didn't realize Suzy had that much power...

Honestly, we'll have to pay whatever the rate is until we can afford to purchase a hybrid vehicle. That's what I'm seriously investigating right now for my husband who works away from home.

We don't really live close enough to any of my husband's co-workers to car pool. Plus, his hours are not fixed, so even if we had a carpooling neighbor, they wouldn't be able to rely on him.

Another option could be for him to work from home more often, but upper management is very reluctant to go this route. I really don't understand this mentality because it's obvious if work isn't getting done. They're not school children needing adult supervision. Whether they're at the office or at home, consequences should be the same regarding production.

Unfortunately I have to pay whatever it cost -- however high that goes. It's just not realistic for me to ride a bike, especially since my husband and I switch off dropping off and picking up the kids. Even if it was just me, there's no bus route that goes by our house to work -- I'd have to make three change-overs on the way there and back. We have changed our habits in that we don't do a lot of joy-riding, just errands, work and pre-planned trips.

Ugh, it's getting very expensive! My mom, who lives in CA, said the "cheap" gas near her is $4.20 a gallon. My SIL, who lives in Sweden, pays roughly $5 a gallon. I try not to complain, but it is definitely causing us to change the way we do things (combining errands, etc.) Thankfully my husband works from home and I'm a SAHM. I feel badly for people who have to commute and pay an arm and a leg for gas!

We moved out to the high spring area in Sept of last year, Now we are spending 600.00 a month in gas.
We are going to move back into town this Sept.
$600 is just to much for us.
And that's not even going anywhere we don't really have to.

I do believe if people could stop buying the gas for a week the gas prices would go down. It' worked in the 70's.
something has to give this can't go on much longer

I also heard that some cities are moving to 4-day work weeks because of the cost of gas. With or without the high gas prices, I'm all for itSmiler

When I went out the other day (ladies night out) it was my first day out of the house in several days and when I saw the gas price above 4.00 I sort of freaked out. Like many, I just don't have that type of money. So i sit and give up going out to do things.

Someone earlier said not to complain about it...yes we do need to complain about it. Because although gas, food, etc...etc.. is rising, pay checks are NOT. Some people are on a very fixed income and something like this can affect everything in the home (Food, activities, home essentials, individuals esstentials, etc... etc...)

If everything goes up dragistically (sp?) then should pay checks; but that is NOT happeneing. So many, many, many are suffering financially just to survive.

Plus...we females are good in bi***ing!!! Wink

isn't there some hope in all of us, Americans that is, pulling together and boycotting all but one or two gas stations?? It would have to be planned just about from city to city. There would need to be an old fashioned town meeting and we would need to discuss which one or two companies to purchase gas from. Say we all chose BP and only purchased gas from BP?? Wouldn't that force other companies to come down even if it was only pennies at a time?? Then once a company lowered prices we could all switch to that one and so on and so on. It needs to be that , or even BETTER boycot ALL stations that don't purchase oil from America. There have been lists of which companies use american oil and which ones import. I don't know but America is falling fast. If we don't do something and do it quickly we will become a nation defeated. I love this country for what it was founded on and I only wish our leaders ....that means congress and the senate and all the other people sitting on capitol hill making money hand over fist....would open their eyes and REALLY begin to care about this country. God needs to come first. Thats what this nation was all about and that is why it became the upstanding first rate nation it was.

There HAS to be a solution....I am beginning to realize what a lack of power we all have as Americans. It seems like decisions are made and we don't get any say whatsoever. The causes I have chosen to get involved with always end up being a losing battle if you go up against Capitol Hill. They are going to chose what makes them popular and what gets them another term. Once again I am speaking of congress and senators. Their lifestyle is too important for them to lose so they will do whatever they can and to h*** with all of us out here!!

Good luck to us, I think we're going to need it in the coming months.

Someone said earlier that the problem could be resolved with more costal drilling and refineries. I think this is part of the solution (will it really be a solution though?).

Also driving the speed limit helps. My mother drives a V6 Mustang....she got 2 more miles/gal by sticking to the limit. A no brainer for me. But be prepared for dirty looks, most people like driving fast. Lowering speed limits and enforcing them is also crucial.

Opening state refuges to drilling could also help. ANWAR among others could be a treasure trove for oil!!

And lets face it, the EPA isn't helping. Requiring so many different formulas of gasoline (CA gas is different than here because of higher polution standards) causes refineries to shut down to change over to another formula, wasting time.

And in MY opinion, we don't need to conserve oil. I know that may get me stoned (as in beaten with stones Smiler but hear me out. The closer we get to the end of the supply, the more likely someone out there will think of an alternative, viable technology to replace the use of oil. Honda is currently testing some cutting edge Hydrogen technology in limited markets that could completely change the way we live if it goes to widespread use. Check it out...Go to the Honda website and look for the FCX Clarity. And to boot, the only emmision is water vapor! Of course, it's only available in certain areas of California and is only a lease (for $600 per month YIKES). But were it an affordable alternative, I'm sure more people would go for it.

Personally, I have stopped joyriding. I live 9 miles from Starke and 15 to Macclenny. I have to plan ahead since I can't afford to jump in the minivan and head to the store for a block of cheese, or a sandwich. So my trips to town are limited to 1-2 per week. Thankfully, the van gets good mileage and my DH works across the street and drives a gas sipper. But once school starts, I'll have to take my kindergartener since I don't want her on the bus. I won't really have a choice. I have to pay what they charge. I wish it were cheaper, yes, but really what can I do. I'll have to go.

Seriously, we have had to stop joy-riding, too. It is out of control and I am whining about it, every day. I mean, it can't get much worse, can it?

Scott just paid $100 to fill his Expedition. We are talking about buying another smaller car for him to drive to work. I hate to think of dealing with another car payment, but if it saves us money overall...

I heard other countries have it much worse than we do...I can't remember if Germany is paying over $8/gal or $11/gal (according to my mom's friend who's daughter lives there). Anyone else heard anything about that?

Either way, gas prices are just ridiculous! Do you think we'll ever see a significant drop?

thank you carmic1975 for your voice of reason. i posted almost word for word what you said in another thread last week.

the only way to accomplish what we are talking about is to actively communicate with our elected officials. how many of us have written to our congressmen?

My big problem lies in the fact that while we all struggle to pay for gas, the big oil companies are reaping some pretty big profits....I read up on it and they MADE over a BILLION dollars in PROFIT last year...so much so that they called Congressional hearings regarding.
And to the person who said we shouldn't complain because we won't let them drill....it has been proven time and again that there are plenty of other places in the US that are already open to drilling but we don't utilize them...now oil companies want to drill in protected refuges..why? Because it's cheaper for them...in the long run it makes more troubles than it solves...why not drill where we are already allowed instead of solely relying on foreign suppliers?
