I am dealing with a severe case of thrush since both the baby and I were on so many antibiotics after birth. We both had them for Strep B and then me twice for mastitis. According to a ped and my lactation consultant, this has killed my "friendly bacteria" in my system and they suggested probiotics like Culturel. I'm gonna try some Activia yogurt first but it's very interesting.

I have used probiotics before. You can find them at your local pharmacy. Just ask your pharmacist. Activia will help but not as much as the probiotic will. I had to put my 3 year old daughter on them not too long ago when she was taking a very strong antibiotic. It was granuals so I put it in applesauce for her. She ate them with no problem.

Whenever you are breastfeeding and have a yeast infection, you have to treat the baby as well as yourself. You can get baby acidophilus (a powder that you mix with breast milk) from your pediatrician and for yourself you can either eat yogurt or take acidophilus tablets (you can get these over the counter). If the infection is that severe, you may also need an anti-fungal med. The probiotics are preventative but don't always work for treatment. Good luck!

My little man LOVES strawberry Kefir...it's like a drinkable yogurt but it is probiotic as well. They sell it at Publix in their natural food section or with the milk. They have other flavors too

I can tell you, Culturel is worth the money. I don't remember why I was on antibiotics, but they gave me persistant intestinal problems (think big D). My doc said to eat yogurt 3 times a day or take Culturel. I like yogurt, but not that much and the Culturel took care of it very quickly.

You can also buy probiotics at Mother Earth Market, they have it for infants and the mother. When my son was on antibiotics we both took it since it would transfer through my breastmilk to him. The infant's version is a powder that you can mix in his fluids or food. We used to mix it in applesauce for him and it has no flavor. It was a lifesaver, anytime he goes on antibiotics we start him on the probiotics as well. Just make sure if your child is currently on antibiotics to not give both doses at the same time because the anti- negates the benefits of the pro-, wait an hour or so after the anti- dose to give the other... (was that totally confusing???)

There is a great product for kids if they get diarrhea like when they are on antibiotics or stomach virus. It is called Florastor Kids. You have to actually ask the pharmacist for it because they keep it behind the counter but you don't need a prescription for it. It costs around 20 dollars but works great. It is a probiotic kind of like Acidophillus.

Ok I didn't enjoy my Activia today so Culturel it is. I also will try the acidophilus if my Ped will agree because I've heard of that before and we've let this go on a really long time and now I have to take Tylenol just to pump...breastfeeding out of the question.
